WHAT I LIKE TO CAPTURE
I create underwater photography and videography for brands, surf brands, and small businesses, capturing products and people in striking aquatic settings, and I take extra care to keep everything safe and stop anything getting lost in the water.
For surf brands and surfers, the ocean is the natural home for your product, giving swimwear, gear, and surf culture authentic, high-energy content. For other brands, underwater imagery is rare and eye-catching, perfect for campaigns and social media where you need to stop the scroll. Answers to the questions people ask most before booking an underwater photographer in Byron Bay. From ocean, pool, surf and brand sessions to swimming ability, housing safety, weather calls and pricing, this section explains how I plan and shoot underwater photography.
Underwater photography is shot with the camera sealed inside a purpose-built housing, working with the light, visibility and movement the water gives on the day. I shoot in the ocean, in pools and in freshwater across Byron Bay, including the Brunswick River and Byron Bay Main Beach. Conditions, not the calendar, decide when a shoot happens.
I shoot underwater portraits and creative sessions, surf and ocean water photography from the water rather than the beach, swimwear and brand work, freediving and ocean lifestyle imagery, and pool-based sessions where conditions need to be controlled. Recent work includes a Creative Underwater Shoot with Dominique and an Underwater Music Press shoot with Romeo.
No certification is needed for pool and shallow-water sessions, and most of the work happens in water you can stand up in or return to easily. I shoot anyone uncomfortable in water in a pool, and I establish comfort before a camera goes in the water.
I shoot underwater with a Sony camera in a Seafrogs housing rated to 40 metres, with natural light. I pressure-test the housings and check the seals before every entry. I carry public liability cover of $5 million, and I supply a certificate of currency to pools, venues and councils on request.
Visibility, swell, tide and light all decide what is possible on a given day, and an ocean shoot booked for a specific date may not be shootable on that date. I book a primary date and a reserve date at the time of booking, monitor conditions in the days before, and call it early rather than wasting your time. Pool sessions are unaffected by conditions and can be booked for a fixed date.
I price underwater sessions per session rather than by the hour, with ocean sessions, pool sessions and commercial or brand work each quoted on the brief.
